Public Anger Mounts over SMRT Train Breakdowns
Public transport operator SMRT took five hours to respond to trains breaking down along popular line, sparks public outrage.

For almost three consecutive days within a week, Singapore public transport operator SMRT has seen three train breakdowns – with two taking place on the highly utilised North-South line.

These train breakdowns are arguably Singapore’s worst train breakdowns ever. All in all, an estimated 500, 000 commuters were affected over the past four days since the first train broke down on the morning of Wednesday, 13 December 2011, on the Circle Line.

A third breakdown took place again on the highly utilised North-South line on the morning of Saturday, 17 December 2011.

As criticism mounts, SMRT explains
A day after SMRT experienced one of its worst train service disruptions to date, its chief executive Saw Phaik Hwa yesterday faced the media and apologised to the 127,000 affected commuters.

"We are truly sorry about this," said Ms Saw, "I understand how difficult it is for a customer, instead of taking half an hour or 45 minutes to go home, to be stuck there for a few hours, and worse, to be stuck on a train without air-conditioning and just ventilation..."

Just the day before, Saw said in a press briefing that no effort would be spared to stop a recurrence of the massive outage that hit the same line on Thursday evening and which affected an estimated 127,000 commuters.

No kidding, Sherlock.

Mr Lui, who was at several stations on Saturday morning, told reporters at Newton station that he is still talking to engineers to get an assessment of how extensive the problem is.

Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew told a media conference on Saturday afternoon that the checks may not be completed in time for normal service to begin at 5.30am.

Mr Lui also said it's not necessary to conduct "thorough health checks" on the Circle Line and North East Line.

The Land Transport Authority (LTA) will comb through the North South and East West lines for "visual anomalies", after a seven-hour breakdown on Saturday, which is its third this week.
