The man heading an inquiry into the recent MRT breakdowns is a judge who commutes regularly by train.
Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew appointed Chief District Judge of the Subordinate Courts, Judge Tan Siong Thye, as the chairman of the Committee of Inquiry (COI) yesterday.
A COI is a high-level probe. One such committee was set up to investigate the Nicoll Highway collapse in 2004.
The other members of the new COI are Professor Lim Mong King from Nanyang Technological University's School of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering, and Mr Soh Wai Wah, Director of Prisons.
Judge Tan said: "As a daily user of the MRT myself, to and from work for more than 10 years, I share the concerns of many who want to know what went wrong and how to restore confidence in our MRT system."
The public can also give evidence at the formal inquiry and may contact the committee's secretary, Mr Sidney Koh, at sidney_koh@mot.gov.sg.
