Liat Towers to take extensive measures after "ponding"

The cause of last Friday's "ponding" at Liat Towers has been traced to a drain that overflowed. Stretching to the back of the building, the drain mostly collects rainwater from Liat Towers' open air car park on the seventh floor.

Despite various measures put in place over the past year, the building's basement was knee-deep in floodwaters last Friday - reminiscent of the scene in June last year when the building was hit by flooding.

This time, some shoppers had to pick their way across chairs to keep dry, or wade through the water.

Hence Liat Towers is planning to build a two-feet-high wall beside a drain that runs along the side of the building as a last resort to keep water out of its basement. The wall will be made of bricks and cement and is expected to cost between S$20,000 and S$25,000.
