Doctors advise taking medical check-up before engaging strenuous activity

First-year Singapore Management University (SMU) student Malcolm Sng Wei Ren, 22, had collapsed at the finish line at Padang at about 8.30am after taking part in a half-marathon run (21.1km) on Sunday.

He was attended to by paramedics and sent to Singapore General Hospital where he died an hour later.

This is the sixth death related to endurance sports in the past seven years since such sports became popular in Singapore.

Dr Jason Chia, who is a sports physician at Tan Tock Seng Hospital, said: "All things considered, running a marathon is really, really quite strenuous. If you don't have adequate training, it presents a lot of stress to your system."
