United briefly took over at the summit with a 2-0 win at QPR in the day's early kick-off but City responded with a 1-0 home victory over in-form Arsenal.

David Silva's close-range finish just after half-time helped Roberto Mancini's men bounce back from their first league loss of the season at Chelsea on Monday to stay two points clear of United.

For Arsenal, the loss ends their brilliant run that had seen them pick up 22 points from a possible 24 since losing to Tottenham at the start of October.

United had earlier thrown down the gauntlet to their neighbours with the easiest of wins at QPR.

Wayne Rooney netted his 15th goal of the season after just 52 seconds with a header from Antonio Valencia's cross to put United ahead.

The champions then missed a succession of chances before Michael Carrick's first top-flight goal for almost two years sealed the points, the midfielder intercepting a pass from Joey Barton and then charging 30 yards before drilling in a low shot from the edge of the box.

Tottenham are now third after recovering from their defeat at Stoke to make it 11 Premier League wins in their last 13 matches with a 1-0 triumph over Sunderland at White Hart Lane.

Substitute Roman Pavlyuchenko, a first-half replacement for the injured Aaron Lennon, struck the only goal of the game in the 61st minute as Spurs remained five points behind United but with a game in hand.

Luka Modric missed a gilt-edged chance to make it 2-0 late on while Sunderland duo Sebastian Larsson and Kieran Richardson were denied by good saves from Brad Friedel.

Sunderland stay just one point above the relegation zone after suffering their first loss under new manager Martin O'Neill.

Liverpool earned a convincing 2-0 win at Aston Villa to climb into sixth above stumbling Newcastle.

Craig Bellamy opened the scoring in the 11th minute, turning the ball in from close range after the impressive Luis Suarez had seen his back-heel saved by Brad Guzan.

Martin Skrtel made it 2-0 four minutes later with a glancing header from a Bellamy corner while Suarez, who tormented the Villa defence, was later denied by both the bar and the post.

On Saturday, Chelsea's good run was brought to an abrupt halt as Jordi Gomez's late equaliser earned Wigan at 1-1 draw at the DW Stadium, while Newcastle were held to a goalless draw at home to Swansea.

Stoke recorded a 2-1 win at Wolves, Fulham beat struggling Bolton 2-0, Everton were held to a 1-1 at home to Norwich and Blackburn lost to West Brom 2-1.
