Crime Alert - New Tactics By Unlicensed Moneylenders: SPF

Police would like to bring to the public’s attention some of the new advertising channels employed by unlicensed moneylenders, which include pamphlets, name cards, newspapers and the Internet.

The public should beware of these new marketing tactics by unlicensed moneylenders: they mislead the public into believing that the loan services offered are legal by reflecting a fake license number.

You can play a part in combating unlicensed money lending activities by alerting the Police if you see an unfamiliar person in your neighborhood exhibiting the following traits:
  • Loitering suspiciously at lift lobbies, common corridors, staircases and carparks; and
  • Carrying plastic bags or backpacks containing cans of paint, marker pens or bicycle chains.
Should any resident receive any advertisements which are believed to be related to unlicensed moneylending, they may handover such advertisements to a police officer at any nearest Neighbourhood Police Centre or Police Post.

If you would like to provide information on Unlicensed Money Lenders, you may call the Police Hotline at 1800-255 0000 or the X-Ah-Long Hotline at 1800-9-24-5664. You may dial ‘999’ for urgent Police assistance.

If you are keen to play a part in making your estate a safer place to live in, you can participate in the Citizens-On-Patrol (COP) initiative. Please contact the nearest Neighbourhood Police Centre in your area to find out more about the COP initiative.
