Two rushed to hospital after Arab Street blaze

Two men were taken to hospital after a blaze at a shophouse at Aliwal Street, near Arab Street.

A Malay man suffered from smoke inhalation while the other, an Indonesian, had no visible injuries. He was taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at around 1.20 am, Monday.

The shophouse was ablaze when the SCDF reached the scene, No. 63 Aliwal Street, eight minutes later. They managed to bring the fire under control within 30 minutes.

However, the second storey was totally burnt while the attic area of the neighouring unit at No. 61 Aliwal Street was also affected by the fire.

The SCDF released a statement saying they had also conducted search operations to ensure that no one was trapped.

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
