A swift and well-coordinated Police response resulted in the arrest of a 52-year-old Chinese man within 30 minutes of a case of armed robbery reported in the vicinity of Serangoon North Avenue 1.
On 9 September 2011 at about 6.05 pm , the victim, a 64-year-old second-hand watch dealer, informed Police that she had been robbed at knifepoint of a watch by an unknown Chinese man while in her shop located in the vicinity of Serangoon North Avenue 1.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division responded immediately and upon arrival at the scene, were informed by several passers-by that the suspect had run up a nearby HDB block. The officers then sealed off the block's exit points and conducted a floor-to-floor search for the suspect.
Shortly after, the suspect was spotted squatting outside a unit at the second floor of the said block and was placed under arrest. A knife, believed to have been used in the commission of the offence, and the victim’s watch, valued at about $13,500, was also recovered from the suspect’s possession.
The suspect will be charged in Court on 10 September 2011 for the offence of Armed Robbery under Section 392 read with Section 397 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224. If convicted, he faces a jail term of up to 14 years and shall be liable for caning of not less than 12 strokes of the cane.
