The Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts (MICA) is calling for public feedback on the framework and implementation of the proposed consumer data protection law.

The law is expected to be introduced for consideration by Parliament early next year.

The public consultation exercise will take place online from today to Oct 25.

The areas of consultation will cover whether data of the deceased will need to be protected, as well as penalties involved.

Singapore currently has no general law governing data protection and this law, while designed to protect consumers, will balance the need for businesses who want to use data for legitimate purposes.

MICA also hopes that this framework will strengthen Singapore as a trusted hub for businesses looking to set up data management companies here.

One example is the fast-growing cloud computing industry.

Singaporeans who dread phone calls from telemarketers also have something to cheer about.

A do-not-call registry is being proposed to allow customers, who do not wish to accept calls or text messages from telemarketing companies, to submit their numbers to the registry.
