'Phony' neighbour arrested in Sembawang for cheating

An unknown male, claiming to be a neighbour living in the same block as the victim at Montreal Drive, had cooked up a fake name, unit number and mobile number, saying his mother was hospitalised and that he needed to borrow $20 and that he would return the money.

However, the victim subsequently realised that the unit was occupied by a Chinese family and the handphone number was invalid.

About two weeks later, two off-duty officers spotted and detained the suspect around Sembawang Drive on September 2.

The suspect will be charged in Court on September 5 for the offence of cheating which carries a punishment of imprisonment for a term which may extend up to 10 years and a fine.

Acting Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Superintendent of Police Chua Chuan Seng, commended Staff Sergeant Ng and Sergeant Lin for their vigilance and quick action which led to the arrest of the suspect.

He advised members of the public to be wary of such a similar ruse.
