OUR inaugural winners of The New Paper School Sports Star Award have been named.
Syasya Rifqah's remarkable story touched the hearts of the judges, who were unanimous in picking her as the girls' winner of the inaugural The New Paper School Sports Star Award.
The 15-year-old student from Teck Whye Secondary was stunned when told she had won the girls' crown and $3,000 in prize money, yesterday.
Syasya said she felt her chances of winning were slim when she came in third among the five girls' finalists on the online voting contest.
Also receiving the School Sports Star Award is Timothee Yap, a 16-year-old track and field athlete from Hwa Chong Institution.
He is so thankful to his coach and school for helping him attain his sporting and academic goals that he already knows how to spend his $3,000 prize money.
Said the hurdler: "The school has helped me a lot in balancing my studies and running. I would like to use some of the money to buy a electronic timer. I don't think any other school, except (Singapore) Sports School, has it."
