A "dynamic" rescue operation is taking place to free a group of miners after a flash flood occurred at the remote Gleision drift mine near the village of Cilybebyll, north of Swansea, South Wales.
Emergency services confirmed they have not been in contact with the men, whose exit is trapped by high water levels, but they are "very hopeful and optimistic" the workers can be rescued. The flash flood happened after what was described by the fire service as a "failure of a water reservoir that was safely held underground".
It is understood water broke through from an old mine working into the shaft where they were.
Seven people were working inside the mine at the time of the accident.
Two men managed to get out and another man stumbled out shortly afterwards.
As rescuers continue to pump water out of a flooded mine, officials have released the names of the four workers who are trapped 90 metres (300ft) underground. The four men are Charles Bresnan, 62, David Powell, 50, and Garry Jenkins, 39, all from the Swansea Valley, and Phillip Hill, 45, from Neath.
