Competitors from Asian region pit skills in S'pore - No, this ain't The Subaru Challenge

Elite rescue teams from a record nine countries - Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Macau, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Brunei and Vietnam, pitted their skills against one another in this year's Civil Defence Skills Competition and impressed in a range of tests at the annual meet held at the Civil Defence Academy in Jalan Bahar.

Rescue work, handling hazardous materials, and a show of strength - these are some of the eight gruelling tests of physical and mental skills.

One of the aims is to foster ties among personnel.

Some of their personnel have only met for the first time a few days ago, but are assigned to teams from other countries to prove that they can work together.

"This competition actually helps to foster camaraderie and so, sharing of skills, knowledge and expertise. That actually helps a lot when we operate at the frontline. We know each other well, the skills that we have, and we are very comfortable working with each other," said Colonel Christopher Tan, director of the Civil Defence Academy.
