Thousands of public sector workers carrying flags and holding placards are filing into The Domain in central Sydney as part of a mass rally.
Organisers expected 20,000 people to march from The Domain to the front of NSW Parliament House on Macquarie Street to protest against government plans to slash 5000 public service back-office jobs and impose a 2.5 per cent wages cap for public sector workers.
The sounds of Bob Dylan, Billy Joel and Green Day played on loudspeakers as police officers, nurses, teachers, ferry and bus drivers gather at the foot of a stage in preparation for the rally, which began about 11.30am.
Among a sea of signs brought into the grassed area is a Public Service Association of NSW placard declaring "This state cannot run without us".
"If the premier had any doubt about the anger of the public sector, all he has to do is look out the window of Parliament House," Unions NSW secretary Mark Lennon said as he addressed the crowd.
