20% of Singapore fell prey to cyber crime - Study

In Singapore, a whopping one-fifth of the population fell prey to cyber crime, last year, an inaugural study by cyber security company, Norton, has revealed.

More than 1.2 million people here suffered US$195m in financial losses, last year.

They then spent another US$675m to resolve the crime, according to Norton.

Overall, the Norton Cyber Crime Report 2012 found that about 80 per cent of Singaporeans have been a cyber crime victim in their lives.

With the blazing hot popularity of smartphones here, 20 per cent here got hit by cyber crime on their mobile phones, above the global rate of 10 per cent.

An interesting finding was that more Singaporean men tend to fall victim to cyber crime, as they spend more time online.

And four times more men than women access pornography online, one key factor that led to this trend as they would inadvertently download computer viruses or malware.
