17-year-old motorcycle thief arrested

Police have arrested a 17-year-old male believed to be responsible for at least two cases of motorcycle theft in the Punggol area.

Two motorcycles were reported missing between Sept 5 and 7.

An ambush operation that was conducted on Sept 14 at about 4.30pm in the vicinitiy of Seah Imm carpark led to the arrest of the suspect.

The suspect had been approaching one of the stolen motorcycles and was about to start its engine when officers arrested him.

Investigations are ongoing.

If guilty, first time offenders will be fined and face up to seven years in jail.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Hsu Sin Yun has advised motorcycle owners to adopt the following crime prevention measures:

- Park your motorcycle in well-lit areas;
- Remove the ignition key and lock the motorcycle whenever it is left unattended, even if it is only for a short while;
- Install an anti-theft alarm; and
- Use additional locking devices, such as disc brake locks.
