Guy planned out elaborate proposal at the zoo, bride-to-be didn't have a clue

It was their first trip to the Singapore Zoo together.

Ms Liew Xin Ting, 24, had been dating Mr Lieu Teck Hua, 30, since 2003, and decided yesterday to make the zoo a date destination.

And what a memorable date it was.

The couple arrived at the zoo shortly after 9am, strolled past exhibits and made their way to the Splash Safari show at 10.30am.

To Ms Liew's great surprise, she was picked as the lucky visitor to get a kiss from the sea lion at the end of the show.

She made her way to the stage and could not stop giggling as the sea lion planted a kiss on her left cheek.

But the sales associate was in for a bigger surprise.

When she turned to her right, her boyfriend was down on a bended knee, a ring in his hand.

Mr Lieu, who lost his right leg after a road accident in 2004 told The New Paper on Sunday then: "We were together for only a year when the accident happened, but she still chose to be with me, to support me."

He added that when they went on dates after his amputation, they got plenty of stares.

"We got a lot of attention that made her feel uneasy. But she stuck with me and so I really do cherish her."

When the surprised Ms Liew said "yes", the crowd clapped and cheered as Mr Lieu slipped the ring onto her finger.

The surprise did not end there.

Mr Lieu pointed to the 60 family and friends seated in the audience, moving his fiancee to tears.

Those folks were shown to their seats only after the couple had settled in theirs earlier on, out of Ms Liew's sight.

Mr Lieu, along with his friends, had worked with zoo employees on putting his well-crafted plan in motion.

Ms Liew told TNPS: "I did not suspect a thing. I feel so gullible!

"I was wondering why the photographers were all around us at the zoo."

Their family and friends rushed to the couple, congratulating the beaming Mr Lieu and his still-teary bride-to-be.

But the biggest surprise was yet to come.

She could not believe what she was hearing when Mr Lieu told her that they were getting married right away.

By noon yesterday, the couple were at the Swissotel Merchant Court, getting ready for their solemnisation ceremony.

Ms Liew had nothing to worry about - her man had everything planned out right down to the wedding gown.

The bride was all aglow in her wedding dress and a pair of gold heels.

Everything was according to her taste.

So how did he know which gown to buy for his bride?

Mr Lieu had taken Ms Liew window shopping for a wedding gown on the pretext he was planning to marry her at the end of the year.

Her friends bought the shoes and her mother took care of the intimates.

Sniffling slightly, the shy bride admitted that she had not "cried this much in a very long time".

At about 2.30pm, the couple exchanged vows - Mr Lieu with a resounding "Definitely I will" and Ms Liew with a shy "I do".

Interlocking their ring-adorned fingers, Ms Liew said: "Everything was perfect. I just wish he had told me earlier to that I could prepare myself."

But, of course, that would have spoilt the whole surprise.
