Beware latest lottery scam - Police

They had each received a scratch-and-win lottery coupon by mail. The coupon, when scratched, revealed that they had won US$88,888. However, in order to receive the money, they had to call a Hong Kong phone number, and were then told to deposit money before they could claim the prize.

Two such cases have been reported to the police. One of them was cheated of US$10,100 (S$12,200) while the other alerted the authorities.

In this latest lottery scam, the coupons are mailed from China and are addressed individually to the potential victims. To add to their veracity, the letters also include the names and contact details of four 'winners' of past lotteries.

Police are investigating and have yet to determine the source of the scam. It advises members of the public never to make advance payment to claim any prize money. It also advised members of the public to ignore any notifications of lottery wins when they have not purchased a lottery ticket or taken part in any such draw.
