Video: Police review soccer fan's arrest caught on tape

SAN DIEGO — San Diego police said Thursday they will review an incident captured on video that shows a police officer’s violent struggle with a soccer fan he was trying to arrest at Tuesday night’s soccer match at Qualcomm Stadium.

Rangel and a friend were attending the Mexico versus Venezuela match when they were ejected from the stadium for belligerent behavior that included throwing things at the crowd and security guards.

The 49-second tape, which was posted on YouTube Wednesday, shows the officer slamming the man’s head onto the ground as he orders him to put his hands behind his back.

The man, identified as 27-year-old David Rangel, did not lose consciousness, but he was treated for a cut on his head before being booked into jail.

Rangel could face charges of battery against a police officer, resisting arrest and being drunk in public. The criminal investigation into his actions has not been completed, Kanaski said.

The officer, whose name was not released, will remain on regular duties as the incident is reviewed.
