A pair of officers were attempting to stop a wanted man. But after a brief struggle, the suspect managed to flee. At this point, one of the officers turned the police dog loose.

As the dog closed in, the suspect pulled out a gun and fired several shots—killing the animal and injuring the officer, who said the wound to his right side came from a slug that was deflected by his bulletproof vest, which very likely saved his life.

The suspect, wanted for a parole violation, was shot to death in the ensuing gunfight.
