A 29-year-old teacher, who cannot be named as there is a gag order, had admitted to repeatedly punching the 19-year-old girl all over and causing her to lose consciousness and being unable to follow her ordinary pursuits for 22 days.
The court heard that the accused had been staying at the victim's home for the past two years.
He was at the flat at about noon on May 24 2010 having taken a can and bottle of beer when he tried to talk to the victim, who was asleep and ignored him. In anger, he started to punch her all over. She tried to get up and struggled but he punched and kicked her on her upper thigh.
He also admitted to lifting up her T-shirt exposing her chest area, removing her shorts and underwear to expose her lower body and touching her thighs. A third charge of insulting her modesty by filming her naked lower body with his mobile was taken into consideration.
The victim's father happened to come home and when he found her lying on the floor, he thought she had been raped and called the police. The victim was warded in the high dependency ward for multiple bruises, abrasions and scratch marks as well as bleeding in the eyes and ears. She was also given 22 days of hospitalisation leave.
The man was jailed for 18 months on Friday.
