SCDF comes up with Multi-Utility Vehicle (MUV) for flash flood situations

SINGAPORE - To enhance its response to flash floods - like the ones which hit Singapore last year - the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) has come up with a prototype of a Multi-Utility Vehicle (MUV) (picture) which can launch inflatable boats close to where people are trapped.

The prototype - which went on display at a workplan seminar on Friday - can also be configured for other kinds of emergencies.

Apart from the MUV, the SCDF has come up with a range of solutions in order to be better prepared, should similar floods affect Singapore again. They form part of its workplan for the new financial year, which began on April 1.

Minister of State for Home Affairs and Education Masagos Zulkifli welcomed the introduction of the new equipment. "At the same time, you don't want to also over-prepare by buying equipment ... configured for only one kind of emergency or one kind of situation, so for that purpose, the SCDF has been very innovative and creative to ensure that their vehicles are configurable and that the equipment can be deployed appropriately," he said.
