SAF personnel awarded medals for contribution to Christchurch quake relief

SINGAPORE - Some 150 Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) personnel received the Overseas Service Medal for their contribution to the Christchurch quake relief operations, on Friday.

Among the recipients was a 116-man team which established a round-the-clock security cordon around the worst affected areas in the Christchurch central business district, and kept the local population away from buildings that were structurally unsafe.

24 air force personnel who airlifted humanitarian supplies and evacuated civilians from the quake-hit city to Wellington and Auckland were also honoured, together with medical officers who provided healthcare and assisted in forensics work.
