Trooper Jeffrey Werda, 43, an 11-year-veteran of the Michigan State Police, responded to a pursuit about 1:30 a.m. earlier today on Birch Run Road in Taymouth Township to help Saginaw County sheriff's deputies with a vehicle pursuit.
Werda subsequently lost control of his cruiser as he drove west on Birch Run near Morrish, left the roadway and rolled several times. A passerby who came upon the crash called 911 for help.
Deputies nabbed the driver they were chasing a short time later. A deputy initially tried to stop the driver because a headlight on the driver's vehicle was not working.
Governor Rick Snyder said today in a statement, "Werda worked tirelessly to protect the people of our state and put his life at risk day after day to protect our communities. I extend my heartfelt condolences to Trooper Werda's wife, his three children and his entire family. The entire state of Michigan mourns the death."
