FINANCE Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam said on Saturday that Singapore has a solid budget with good revenues, and the goods and services tax (GST) will not go up for at least five years. He was speaking at the launch of a senior activity centre in Taman Jurong.
The Jurong GRC MP was speaking out in reponse to rumours that the GST could be raised after the General Election, an issue that has been raised on TV forums.
'We have absolutely no reason to raise the GST. Let's put that rumour to rest,' he said, adding that the GST is a fair scheme and helps to subsidise the poor and middle-income group.
However, he does not rule out the possibility of it rising 10 or 20 years from now. But he reiterated that it 'does not need to go up for a long time yet'.
