FBI posts online appeal to solve murder case

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has turned to members of the public, for help in solving a mysterious case involving two encrypted notes.

The 12-year-old case has so far remained unsolved, as officers have been unable to crack the codes found in the victim's pockets.

On June 30, 1999, the body of 41-year-old Ricky McCormick (photo) was found dumped in a field in St Louis, Missouri. The only clues regarding the homicide were two encrypted notes found in his pants pockets.

The more than 30 lines of coded material use a 'maddening variety of letters, numbers, dashes, and parentheses'.

"We are really good at what we do," said FBI's unit chief Dan Olson, "but we could use some help with this one."

According to the latest update, the appeal for help has generated an overwhelming response. The FBI have now set up a new site (http://forms.fbi.gov/code) where the public can offer their comments and theories about the coded messages.
