IN APRIL last year, animal rescue volunteer Derrick Tan received a call from a breeder who was looking to give up his breeding farm as he could not manage it any longer.
When Mr Tan visited the Paris Ris kennel, what he saw shocked him.
'The dogs were malnourished and overly bred,' said Mr Tan, 30, a general manager with a marine repair company. Fellow volunteer Pearly Looi, 41, a business consultant, called the farm's condition 'atrocious', saying: 'The dogs were sitting in their own urine and faeces.' Many were found in poor health, with ear infections, skin conditions and other diseases.
Subsequently, Mr Tan paid a five-figure sum to buy the 75 dogs, which included miniature schnauzers, labradors and malteses. The kennel operator was later charged with animal cruelty, after investigations were conducted, said a spokesman for the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA). The case is pending a court decision.
