Worker dies after accident at ExxonMobil refinery

SINGAPORE - ExxonMobil suspended maintenance work at its Singapore refinery after the death of a contract worker.

Two contract workers were discovered unconscious in an enclosed space filled with nitrogen at 7.30pm last night.

One of them, a 34-year-old Indian worker succumbed to his injuries and died at about 9pm. The other is in critical condition in hospital.

"As a result of this incident, all work relating to the turnaround at the Jurong refinery has been suspended," the company said, adding that it is working with the authorities to investigate the cause of the event.

The company also operates another 296,000 bpd (barrels per day) refinery on Jurong island.
