LOS ANGELES — A motorist who failed to pull over for allegedly speeding near the Grapevine led police on a three-hour chase on several Southland freeways today before being arrested in an industrial park in San Dimas.
An officer attempted to stop a driver identified as Daniel Wachter on the southbound 5 Freeway near the Grapevine about 2 p.m.
Wachter, 19, got off the freeway in Valencia, drove around, then got back on the freeway and continued south on a series of freeways.
After nearly an hour, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) called off the chase. They knew who the driver was and did not want to endanger anyone by continuing the pursuit. After a while, Wachter got back on the eastbound San Bernardino Freeway and continued at a normal speed, followed primarily by television helicopters, and eventually by a pair of motorcycle officers.
He had reached the San Bernardino area by 4 p.m. and stopped in Loma Linda and then returned to San Dimas, where he got out of the vehicle - wearing what appeared to be a bathrobe - about 5 p.m.
Wachter was smoking something from a pipe as CHP officers closed in on him with a Taser gun. He appeared to contradict himself after saying he was smoking "just marijuana," and after that saying "I haven't smoked any today," before attempting to flee. The CHP officers used the Taser to subdue him.
CHP had been in contact with the man's mother who said he had "mental problems".
