The two servicemen, aged 19 and 20, from the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) went fishing at Ascot Waters during the wee hours of the morning while they were off duty.

A group of seven men had approached the duo, asking for cigarettes. They went away when the duo asked how old they were.

The gang returned with empty bottles and a metal wrench, demanding the two Singaporeans to give them their wallets.

The group then assaulted them and fled with the victims' cash and credit cards.

The assault was so severe that the 19-year-old sustained a 2cm to 3cm cut on his forehead, while the other had swollen eyes, severe bruises and cuts on his back as well as torso. He may need plastic surgery on his eye.

The two were discharged from hospital on the same day.

Australian police are looking for "dark-skinned males" in their late teens and early 20s. No arrests have been made.
