Man escapes gallows for boy's death

In November 2009, Mohammad Johan kicked and stamped on six-year-old Muhammad Nor Rashidy Rahmat, aged six, at least five to six times at a Queenstown flat.

After failing to resuscitate the boy, he stuffed the body in a trolley bag and hid it in bushes near the Kallang River.

Mohammad Johan also disposed of a pillow which had been stained with the boy's blood.

Two days before the incident, they were out together and the boy's grandmother repeatedly asked for the boy to be brought home. But Mohammad Johan did not do so.

The boy's aunt then threatened to file a police report if he did not send the boy home.

The boy then told Mohammad Johan: "Serve you right", before throwing his PlayStation controller onto the floor. An angry Mohammad Johan then kicked and stamped on the boy.

Originally facing the death penalty, Mohammad Johan Rashid, 32, was spared the gallows yesterday after he had his murder charge amended to one of culpable homicide.

The case has been adjourned to Monday for Mohammad Johan's mitigation plea to be heard.
