SINGAPORE : The Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) has said it is monitoring food imports from Japan "closely" to ensure they are safe for consumption.

This follows a 9.0-magnitude earthquake that struck northeast Japan last Friday, crippling several nuclear plants in the area and raising worldwide fears of a radiation leak.

AVA said it will test fresh produce - including seafood, fruits, vegetables and meat - exported out of Japan after March 11 for radioactive contaminants as a precautionary measure.
