In a written statement to AsiaOne, NEA said it received feedback at about 2.30pm on Sunday from residents in the Yishun and Canberra estates that they could smell what they described as chemicals or gas.

The smell had dissipated by about 5pm on the same day.

NEA said it had carried out measurements of the air quality in the affected areas and no toxic gases were detected.

The smell was not of Singapore origin and NEA's Malaysian counterparts have been informed.

A continuous gas monitoring system to monitor the presence of volatile organic compounds will be in place by the end of this month to detect any toxic gases in the air should the smell incident occur again.
