Man jailed, caned for rioting

23-year old Augustine William was part of a group that was involved in the fight which erupted at an open space between Blocks 141 and 144 Teck Whye Lane at around midnight on January 25 2010.

Court documents stated that two members of his group, 28-year-old Narendran Ravindran and 23-year-old Sathya were the ones who had physically assaulted

William, a former secret society member, had instead used a wooden pole to hit an unknown Chinese man in the face.

The fight broke up not long afterwards and those involved fled, leaving an injured Mr Lim lying unconscious on the ground.

Mr Lim, who was also known as "Orh Pa" or Black Panther, was sent to the National University Hospital and died at around noon that day.

William was on Thursday jailed 30 months and given three strokes of the cane for being part of a brawl. He is the second member of his group to be convicted in court for being involved in the fight.

25-year-old Gunesh Kumar Loganathan, who pleaded guilty to the offence earlier this month, has already been sentenced to 40 months jail and was given six strokes of the cane.
