Malaysia moves to outlaw TV screens and DVD players in cars

BUTTERWORTH - Malaysia's Road Transport Department (JPJ) is seeking to amend the Road Transport Act to clamp down on motorists who install TV screens and DVD players in their vehicles, The Star reported.

"It is illegal and dangerous to fix these accessories. A driver can easily get distracted and it may result in accidents,'' said JPJ director Hassan Yaacob.

Mr Hassan said an amendment under Section 66 of the Road Transport Act 1987 will make it illegal to install such screens and players without permission from the department.

The director also issued a warning to drivers who have installed exceedingly-bright xenon headlights or sport "fancy" licence plates, and that enforcement teams will be on the lookout if vehicles have not complied with approved specifications.
