End to midge problem in Bedok?

The population of green flies known as midges, which has been plaguing the Bedok Reservoir area for weeks, has been reduced by 95 per cent.

The National Environment Agency and the Public Utilities Board deposited BTI - a safe, environmentally-friendly pesticide - into the water to kill the larvae, while the Aljunied Town Council sprayed pesticide on the walls at every floor of the housing blocks around the reservoir.

The tiny insects, which appeared in the millions in the area two weeks ago, are harmless. It is not known what caused the sudden surge in their numbers.
