British royal guards to get TASERs

LONDON — In England, most officers do not carry firearms, except those that protect VIPs, including the royal family.

Police officers who protect Britain’s royal family will now be armed with Taser stun guns in the wake of December’s attack by protesters on Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles.

The move follows widespread criticism of police bodyguards and their commanders after the royal couple was attacked as they were chauffeured through central London during violent tuition-hike protests.

The new "nonlethal" option - the stun guns can then deliver an electric charge of 50,000 volts - will supplement the conventional firearms that specially designated guards carry while guarding the royal family.
