Malaysian entrepreneur Tony Fernandes has been awarded a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by Queen Elizabeth II.

The citation said the award was conferred on Mr Fernandes - who is the Team Lotus team principal, AirAsia Group CEO and Tune Group founder - "for services to promote commercial and educational links" between the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

The CBE is the second major award Mr Fernandes has received in Europe.

Last year, the French government conferred upon him the title of Officier of the Legion d'honneur, the highest award for a non-French national, for his outstanding contributions to the aviation industry.
