Thin 'sotong tyre' is in, but unsafe

MOTORCYCLE riders are outfitting their bikes with super-thin racing tyres for speed and looks - but this may come at the expense of safety.

Bike owners say they get these 'sotong tyres', which are not widely available here, from Johor in Malaysia and Thailand. The modified tyres, which can be merely 45mm wide and 40.5mm tall, are named after the Malay word for squid because of their resemblance to squid rings.

Standard motorcycle tyres are about 80mm wide and 72mm tall, depending on the bike model.

Skinny tyres first surfaced a decade ago in Thailand, when motorbike enthusiasts started modifying their bikes from top to bottom - with eye-catching seats, and lamps and tyres so slim that they resemble bicycle tyres.

Young motorcyclists here took to the fad when they saw pictures of the modified bikes on Thai websites.

In Singapore, they are mainly prized for their looks and promise of speed.
