S'porean students return from Cairo

SINGAPORE: It was a tearful reunion for many at Changi Airport on Sunday morning shortly after flight SQ493 touched down from Cairo.

A group of about five Singaporean students from Al-Azhar University are now safely home, away from the protests in the Egyptian capital.

It was early in the morning but the students' family members were already at the airport's Arrival Hall anxiously awaiting their loved ones' return.

Many were seen pacing impatiently back and forth, while others sat chatting quietly with one another.

But they sprang to their feet the moment they spotted their family members.

The Al-Azhar students rushed into the arms of their loved ones, looking tired but relieved.

One of them's 25-year-old Srinurmiftah Hayati Munawar, a third-year Syariah (Islamic law) student.

Arriving safely home was a bittersweet moment for her as she misses her close friends in Cairo.

"I'm extremely worried for them. I wish they could come here until everything is settled down. The day before, it was quite chaotic because the riots began after the prayers. The Singaporean students were very afraid. We stayed indoors. The embassy also checked on us."

Ms Srinurmiftah said there are about 200 Singaporean Al-Azhar students who chose to remain in Egypt.
