CHANGE has been the buzzword in recent weeks. The national team have been disbanded and tweaks have been made to the youth development system.
And last Wednesday, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) unveiled initiatives - the highlight of which was the 5pm kick-off for six Young Lions home fixtures at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Saturdays - to breathe new life into the ailing S-League.
But what about introducing a new play-off format popular in American sports, more 'live' matches at neighbourhood stadiums and cutting the number but improving the quality of foreign imports?
These were three of the top suggestions from members of the local football community, who believe a lot more needs to be done to inject excitement into the 16-year competition.
An average of just 1,417 fans attended each game last season - the lowest in the league's history, and a far cry from the 1990s, when some matches drew close to 5,000 fans.
Said one local club chairman who requested anonymity: 'These changes by the FAS are merely cosmetic. They have been done just to appease the fans out there who have seen so many issues plague local football over the last couple of weeks.
