One person dead in Tacoma officer-involved shooting

TACOMA, Washington -- Two Tacoma Police officers fatally shot a man Friday night after he opened fire on them, officers said.

The shooting occurred at a 76 gas station and convenience store near East Portland Avenue and Puyallup Avenue in Tacoma around 7:00 p.m.

Tacoma Police Chief Don Ramsdell said the two officers were conducting routine patrols and spotted a suspicious person near a phone booth at the gas station.

"As they exited the patrol car to contact him, the individual pulled out a handgun and fired shots at the officers. I don’t know how many officers at this point in time. Our officers returned fire," said Chief Don Ramsdell.

"About 5 seconds after the shots stopped, another set went off," said witness Jennifer Works.

The supect died at the scene. Neither of the officers were injured in the incident.
