The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it responded to a total of 4,600 fires last year - a drop of 12 per cent from 2009.
The number of fires in residential premises fell eight per cent to 3,267 last year from 2009.
SCDF said this slide in the number of fires over the years can be attributed to the greater public awareness on fire safety and the concerted public education efforts by SCDF and its community partners.
But rubbish chute fires remain a problem, accounting for about 40 per cent of such fires.
SCDF's Colonel Anwar Abdullah, Director of the Operations Department said "We are going to work with the Tanjong Pagar Town Council to introduce a water system to extinguish fire if there's a fire in the rubbish chute. It's work in progress and we are going to launch it very soon."
