NSF dies in camp accident

SINGAPORE - A full-time National Serviceman (NSF) died on Friday morning from an in-camp accident.

Lance-Corporal Eugin Wee Yong Choon, 19, was hit by a truck driven by another serviceman.

The Ministry of Defence (Mindef) said Eugin, a signal operator in the army, was about to unload stores from the back of a three-tonne UNIMOG truck when it reversed into him. The incident happened at about 7am in Jurong Camp 1. Mindef said in a statement that a Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) medic attended to Eugin immediately.

It added he was sent to the National University Hospital at about 7.15am, where he died about 45 minutes later. Mindef is investigating the incident.

Mindef added that any action on the serviceman who was behind the wheel of the truck will only be taken after investigations are complete.

A similar incident happened at Seletar Camp in 2009.

Second-Lieutenant Nicholas Chan Wei Kit, 21. died after being pinned down by a land rover which was reversing. The driver, Private Muhammad Abdul Qaiyuum Muhammed Iskander, was fined $5,000 for his part in the accident.
