HPB's 'Lose to Win' contestant dies

SINGAPORE - A contestant's death in the Health Promotion Board (HPB) Lose to Win Challenge has prompted a safety review of its activities.

Lose to Win comprises fitness assessments, nutrition workshops, physical exercises and follow-up activities. Contestants stand to win cash and vouchers worth between $200 and $5,000.

HPB said the programme encourages healthy weight loss, which is defined medically as 0.5 to 1kg each week, up to 5kg per month.

Mr Ong Joo Aun, 54, collapsed after completing a two-kilometre brisk walk on Saturday morning, part of a fitness assessment for the weight-loss programme. The shipyard worker, who had taken 17 minutes to complete the walk, was resting at Yishun Stadium when he collapsed.

Medical personnel on standby administered first-aid and ferried him to the nearest hospital, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

A HPB spokesperson said that Mr Ong had not shown any discomfort or distress during the assessment and did not indicate he was feeling unwell during the safety checks and briefings.

Mr Ong first participated in 2009, shedding 3.2kg over 12 weeks to weigh 72.6kg. He returned in November for the programme's second run. His weight in May was 71.6kg and, on the day of the fitness assessment, 69.9kg, said HPB.
