SIXTEEN pedigree puppies were found hidden inside a speaker in the boot of a car at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Friday.
They were discovered after officers carrying out a routine check heard a noise coming from the speaker.
They opened the casing and found seven red poodles, four bull dogs, three Shih Tzus and two pugs packed into the drum and two shelves inside the unit.
A 36-year-old Malaysian man has been arrested on suspicion of smuggling.
It is rare for dogs to be smuggled into Singapore. The Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) said this was the biggest such attempt in three years.
Each dog could have been sold here for $1,000 or more as the dogs are of highly prized breeds.
