Police use ice cream music to embarrass teen rioters in Belfast

Nursery rhymes set to music are deeply uncool. Just ask the bottle-throwing teenagers on the Twinbrook estate on outskirts of west Belfast.

'The crew passed a group of around 15 youths who threw bottles at their Land Rover police vehicle,' a PSNI spokesman told the Belfast Telegraph.

'An officer used the vehicle's loudspeaker system to play music to the youths in an effort to use humor to defuse the situation. The youths stopped throwing the bottles. However police accept that this was not an appropriate action. MORE

Kellogg recalls cereals

NEW YORK - FOUL smells from some Kellogg Co breakfast cereals prompted the world's largest cereal maker to voluntarily pull millions of packages from store shelves around the United States.

Kellogg said on Friday it noticed 'an uncharacteristic off-flavour and smell' from the box liners of its popular Apple Jacks, Corn Pops, Froot Loops and Honey Smacks products.

The company said the chance of serious illness from the smell was low, but the products could cause nausea and diarrhoea among sensitive consumers.

Only US products marked with the letters 'KN' following the 'better if used before' date notice were affected, the company said. MORE

Balancing car ownership - A question of supply and demand

The by-product of Singaporeans' drive for material success is evident on the roads: Cars, lots of them. But as one of the smallest countries in the world, filled with an ever-growing population, the obsession with owning a car has to go.

"I think we need greater recognition that our principal ambition is to ensure that we continue to live in this beautiful city where the sky is blue and the air is clean, and not like some cities in the world where you come out and the sky is perpetually grey, infected by pollution from lots of vehicles trapped in a huge traffic jam everyday," said Transport Minister Raymond Lim. City Harvest replaces Kong Hee

IT MAY be a while before City Harvest Church founder Kong Hee takes to the pulpit again.

On Friday, the megachurch said it had replaced Mr Kong, 46, as the head of the church ministry. Mr Kong is expected to stay out of the spotlight until the current investigations into the misuse of church funds are complete.

The seat is now shared by two senior pastors, Mr Derek Dunn and Mr Aries Zulkarnain. Both men are well-known personalities at City Harvest. Mr Dunn is its executive pastor and Mr Zulkarnain is one of the church's founding members.

The move, however, does not put Mr Kong completely out of the picture. He remains the president and chairman fo the church's 10-member management board. MORE

4 hurt by fallen trees

FOUR people were injured when falling trees or tree branches struck the cars they were in during Friday morning's intense and heavy downpour which caused flash floods in many areas across Singapore.

Gusty winds snapped and uprooted at least six trees, some of which fell across major roads, blocking lanes and bringing traffic to a halt. Along the Central Expressway towards Yishun, between Ang Mo Kio Avenues 1 and 3, a tree fell onto several vehicles, including a van at around 9am.

A man and woman in the van were injured. The Singapore Civil Defence Force rushed two ambulances to the scene. The couple were treated at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The woman had bruises and the man fractured his left hand.

Just half an hour later, along Kampung Bahru Road towards Keppel Distripark, near the Malayan Railway (KTM) station, two more persons were injured when a tree fell on a taxi. They were both sent to Singapore General Hospital by the SCDF. The man had a laceration on his right hand, while the woman injured her left hand.

SCDF officers also rescued a passenger and the driver from another taxi which was stuck in the floodwaters at the junction of Macpherson Road and Kampong Ampat at about 9 am.

They were also called to help evacuate 18 preschoolers at a childcare centre at Telok Kurau Lorong G, and pump out water from the school premises. The pupils and seven staff members were moved to a neighbour's house. SOURCE

Oliver Fricker gets 5 months and caning

"Gimme a FIVE (months)!"

CONVICTED vandal Oliver Fricker was sentenced to five months' jail and three strokes of the cane on Friday evening for entering a protected place and spraying paint on two carriages of an SMRT train.

The 32-year-old IT consultant is appealing against his sentence, according to his lawyer, Mr Derek Kang.

Fricker, who went to jail on Friday, had admitted to a vandalism charge and an offence under the Protected Areas and Protected Places Act. He did them with his friend, Briton Dane Alexander Lloyd, 29, at the SMRT Changi depot between May 16 and 17.

A third charge of cutting the perimeter fence of the depot was considered during his sentencing. MORE
