Taxi driver gets 4 weeks for act that killed pregnant woman

SINGAPORE - A taxi driver has been sentenced to four weeks in jail for a rash act that resulted in the death of a motorcycle pillion rider who was three months pregnant.

Yin Ming Seng, who is 72 years old, has also been disqualified from operating all vehicles for eight years.

The court heard that on Dec 19, 2008, at about 11.30pm, Yin was driving his taxi along Loyang Avenue towards Tampines Avenue 7.

When he reached a junction with traffic lights, Yin turned right into Tampines Expressway without giving way to other vehicles.

The "green arrow" signal was not on at that time.

As a result, Yin's taxi hit a motorcyclist, 30-year-old Ridzuan Saadon, who was travelling in the opposite direction.

Ridzuan hurt his leg in the accident.

His wife, 28-year-old Siti Sadra Mesran, who was riding pillion, suffered multiple injuries and was sent to Changi General Hospital.

She was pronounced dead shortly after midnight. MORE
