Hodgson spoke openly about his reasons for accepting the job. Chief amongst them, he admitted, was the chance to work with some of the best players in the world like Gerrard, Torres, Javier Mascherano and Jamie Carragher.
"We will fight tooth and nail to keep our best players, whether it's Steven, Fernando, Mascherano or any others you care to name," he said.
"But I can't nail their feet to the floor, I can only try and persuade them if they stay here, we will have a good season and it's a great club to play for. We're all very anxious to keep them." MORE
