Zero to Hero
From Public Enemy Number One to Player of the Year, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has completed one of the most improbable rehabilitations in the recent history of the English game.

Just a year ago, the football world recoiled in horror after the Uruguayan sank his teeth into the forearm of Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic during a game at Anfield, earning him a fine and a 10-game ban.

It came just over a year after he had been handed an eight-match suspension for racially abusing Manchester United's Patrice Evra, and prompted speculation that he might never play for Liverpool again.

Twelve months on, he has been elected Player of the Year by the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) after becoming the first Liverpool player since Ian Rush in 1986-87 to score 30 league goals in a season.

That Suarez has reached the 30-goal mark is rendered all the more remarkable by the fact that he missed the first five matches of the campaign as he completed his ban for biting Ivanovic.

It also came after a turbulent close season, which saw Suarez push for a move away from Liverpool and even accuse the club of breaking promises after they blocked a potential transfer to Arsenal.

Rodgers rebuked Suarez, briefly forcing him to train on his own, but Liverpool owner John W. Henry stood firm, refusing to cede his most prized asset to a major rival.

The club's faith was rewarded emphatically, as the Uruguayan struck up a lethal understanding with strike partner Daniel Sturridge that has helped to fire Liverpool back into the Champions League.

It took Suarez only 36 minutes of his first league game, at Sunderland in September, to open his account for the campaign.

After a hat-trick against West Bromwich Albion and a brace against Fulham, he scored four times at home to Norwich City, opening his account with a stunning 45-yard lob.

They were the initial shots in a salvo of 10 goals in four games, which meant that the race for the Golden Boot was effectively over by Christmas.

In a development that would have been unthinkable months earlier, he signed a new four-and-a-half-year contract in December, having captained the team in a match against Tottenham Hotspur the previous week.

"It was weird, strange. I'd never imagined myself as Liverpool skipper," Suarez told FourFourTwo magazine recently.

"After everything that had happened with me, to retain the support of the club, the coach and my team-mates showed me they were happy to forget and forgive."

Even when the odds are against him, Suarez has demonstrated repeatedly over the past 12 months that he does not give up easily.

Responding to a rising chorus among comic-book fans for an all-star team of DC superheroes, Warner Bros. announced a Justice League movie that will arrive in theaters in 2018.

In an interview with The Wall Street Journal Sunday, Greg Silverman, the studio's president of production, said that Zack Snyder would follow his Man of Steel sequel, 2016's Batman vs. Superman, by directing the long-awaited film version of the popular comics series.

Silverman did not detail the characters who would flesh out Justice League ranks, but said he expected Henry Cavill to return as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman and Gal Gadot to play Wonder Woman.

The announcement is the latest salvo in an escalating showdown between DC and Marvel Comics to rule Hollywood.

British police arrested a 15-year-old male pupil after a female teacher was stabbed to death at a Catholic school on Monday in a rare attack on educational staff.

Anne Maguire, a 61-year-old Spanish teacher, suffered multiple stab wounds in the incident which was witnessed by other children at Corpus Christi Catholic College in Leeds, northern England.

Police said teachers at the school captured the suspect at the scene and held him until officers arrived.

The teacher died later in hospital.

Violence at British schools has risen in recent years, and there has been growing concern over knife attacks involving teenagers. But fatal attacks on teachers are extremely rare.

Adventure Time!!!
Arsenal moved four points clear of Everton in the race for the fourth and final Champions League place on offer to Premier League clubs with a convincing 3-0 win over Newcastle United on Monday.

A rare strike by Laurent Koscielny opened the scoring at the Emirates Stadium before Mesut Ozil netted for the 10th time this season.

Olivier Giroud sealed victory with his 21st goal of the campaign to boost the Gunners' hopes of a 17th successive term in Europe's premier club competition.

Arsene Wenger's side now require just one more victory from their final two league matches against either West Bromwich Albion or Norwich City to book their spot.

In truth, visitors Newcastle had goalkeeper Tim Krul to thank for keeping the scoreline respectable as Alan Pardew, back on the touchline after a seven-game absence due to suspension, saw his side suffer a sixth successive league defeat -- the north-east club's worst run in the English top flight since the 1986/87 season.

Travellers departing Singapore are advised not to travel by foot into the Woodlands checkpoint during this peak period but to take public transport instead.

Motorists are encouraged to use the Second Link to help ease the expected heavy traffic situation at the Causeway.

Baptism of fire for this shiny new machine
A fire broke out at a warehouse on Tuas Avenue 11 on Sunday afternoon, involving petroleum-based products.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted to the fire at 3.38pm and sent eight fire engines, two Red Rhinos, four supporting vehicles, one ambulance and one unmanned firefighting machine.

It took two and a half hours to put out the fire, with the help of 14 water and foam jets.

The jets used include two aerial platform monitors which were used for aerial firefighting, and an unmanned firefighting machine which was deployed inside the warehouse to apply a foam blanket over the raging fire, which took up an area of about 50m by 50m, while external foam jets were used to surround the warehouse to contain the fire and to prevent it from spreading to the neighbouring units.

The owner of a limited edition Ferrari sent his car to the authorised agent for servicing, but got back a badly smashed ride.

Businessman Lim Chin Liang is now suing Ital Auto for an unspecified sum, claiming that his second-hand Ferrari F430 Scuderia - apparently one of only eight in Singapore - was damaged beyond repair.

He sent his car for servicing on March 15.

Two days later, Ital's quality tester took the car out for a post-servicing test-drive, and lost control of it on a wet road.

The young couple seemed keen on his products at first, but then they suddenly grew quiet.

Mr Muhammad Waseem Ahmed, who owns a perfume store at Lucky Plaza, suspected she had stolen a bottle of perfume and confronted her. He was right.

The case was just one of many shoplifting cases in Orchard Road. The number has gone up in the first three months of this year compared to the same period last year.

The New Paper visited 31 shops along Orchard Road last Thursday. A third said they had been victims of shoplifters. In most cases, the shoplifters were young and worked in groups.

Smartly dressed and ready with a smile, they approached the heart patients with lots of concern.

Then, they pushed their products.

The New Paper was alerted to aggressive sales tactics by health supplement promoters from Herbalife who had camped at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS).

These promoters would target patients and their family members who were at the centre waiting for their appointment.

TNP learnt that some of the unsuspecting patients had no clue that the promoters were not working for the hospital.

Both NHCS and Herbalife said promoters are not allowed to hawk their products this way.

The accident happened yesterday (April 28) at the junction of Yishun Avenue 1 and 2, near the exit to Sembawang Road.

The truck had just started moving after the lights turned green when the Suzuki swerved into their lane from behind and collided into the rear of their truck.

The driver, a woman in her 40s, walked out of her car with no visible injuries.

Motorcyclists also pay COE and taxes

It has been five months since my letter ("More motorcycle parking spaces in CBD, please"; Nov 20, 2013) was published. But up to now, nothing has been heard from any government agency on easing the parking woes of motorcyclists.

When a sudden downpour occurs, it is extremely frustrating that motorcyclists are unable to seek shelter in the nearest building simply because there are no motorcycle parking spaces. There are so many buildings in the Central Business District (CBD), yet nothing is being done to help the poor riders.

Motorcyclists are also shoppers, and shopping centres can be more motorcycle-friendly.

Last Christmas, I entertained a group of motorcycle enthusiasts who had ridden all the way from Bangkok. They had wanted to visit the integrated resorts, but were put off by the fact that Marina Bay Sands did not provide motorcycle parking spaces, and the nearby open carpark was full. The only option was for them to park illegally.

Sentosa was worse as motorcycles are not even allowed on the island.

Motorcycles form an integral part of the country's transport system. Like car owners, motorcyclists pay certificate of entitlement premiums, taxes, transfer fees and other government charges.

If the State requires all buildings - in or outside the CBD - to provide parking spaces for cars, should the same not apply to motorcycles?

Can cabbies pick up roadside fares close to taxi stands?

Last Thursday evening, my wife and I waited for a cab at the Jalan Sultan taxi stand, where at least eight other people were queueing.

It was drizzling and we were relieved when we saw a few empty taxis approaching us from the junction of North Bridge Road and Jalan Sultan.

However, before the cabs reached the taxi stand, most of them were flagged down by passengers standing outside the Textile Centre.

Other taxis that dropped off passengers in front of the centre were immediately boarded by other people.

My wife and I tried to book a taxi but were unable to do so for more than 15 minutes because of the high call volume.

We managed to board a taxi only after 25 minutes of waiting.

Can the relevant authorities comment on whether it is acceptable for taxi drivers to pick up roadside fares close to taxi stands? If not, then they should deploy staff to ensure taxi drivers follow the rules.
